Bun Throwing fun

Caught one at the Abingdon 2011 bun throwing

The marriage of Prince William to Kate Middleton on 29th April 2011 was made even more exciting for us at Throwing Buns as it meant we got to experience our first bun throwing since opening in June 2010.

Having spent months prior to opening ‘Throwing Buns’ researching this ancient Abingdon tradition it was an amazing experience to see buns rain from the sky to mark the Royal wedding! We couldn’t resist turning the shop red, white and blue in celebration and even excited customers chipped in with one covering the street outside the shop in bunting for us at 7am on the morning of the wedding!

It took just over 20 minutes for the Mayor of Abingdon and his fellow councillors to throw 4000 buns from the County Hall to the thousands that had gathered in and around Abingdon’s market square to try their luck at catching a bun! In true cheating style, we at Throwing Buns had contacted the bakers of these buns and got an extra 100 made up for those who weren’t successful in catching one! The atmosphere in the shop all day was second to none with regular customers and visitors to Abingdon coming in to enjoy coffee and cake whilst browsing all of our bun throwing memorabilia!

Bun Throwing Memorabilia

The buzz in the town was one we certainly won’t forget and has already made us excited about the next bun throwing in 2012 to mark the Queen’s diamond jubilee!
